Postcards From the Edge (1990)

“Thanks GOD I got sober now so I can be hyper-conscious for this series of humiliations.” – Suzanne

Number of Times Seen – at least 3 times (cable in the 90’s, 13 Aug 2008 and 27 Mar 2018)

Brief Synopsis – A famous actress must live with her famous mother as she tries to overcome a drug problem.

My Take on it – This is a really fun film that would be hard to believe was based on truth if it weren’t for the fact that it was written by Carrie Fisher who went through much of what this film portrays in her own life.

Meryl Streep and Shirley MacLaine are both great here in the two lead roles and its enjoyable watching their constant bickering.

Steep was (not surprisingly) nominated for an Oscar, Golden Globe for Best Actress for this role but didn’t manage to win any of them that year; she lost the Oscar to Kathy Bates for Misery (1990) and the Globes to Julia Roberts for Pretty Women (1990).

The supporting cast is also great with Dennis Quaid, Richard Dreyfuss and Gene Hackman doing great jobs in small but important roles.

Watching this film now was quite bittersweet largely due to the fact that many parts of this seem prophetic about the life of Fisher who passed away in December 2016.

They do a really nice job keeping the balance between comedy and drama keeping us amused as well as somber about all that occurs here.

This film works quite well as a cautionary tale of fame especially when growing up in a family of famous people.

Bottom Line – Fun film that might be hard to believe if it wasn’t for the fact that it was written by Fisher who based it on her own life. Streep and MacLaine are both great in the two main roles and are helped by a great supporting cast that includes Quaid, Dreyfuss and Hackman. This is a bit bittersweet rewatching now because parts are quite prophetic about Fisher’s future.  Has a great balance between comedy and drama and it works quite well as a cautionary tale about fame and growing up in a famous family.  Recommended!

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – Liza Minnelli reportedly told writer Carrie Fisher that the film resembles her own relationship with her own famous mother, Judy Garland. (From IMDB)

Rating – Globe Worthy (7/10)
