“When you die, everyone wants to be your friend.” – Valerie
Number of Times Seen – 1 (27 Mar 2018)
Brief Synopsis – An elderly actor befriends a young aspiring model and they both try to understand what kind of relationship they have together.
My Take on it – This is a film that I heard about when it came out solely due to the rave reviews of Peter O’Toole’s performance.
This performance garnered him numerous award nominations in what would become his final great role before his death 7 years later.
This is yet another film that shows the risks that O’Toole was willing to take based on his choices of roles in films tat were controversial and distinct.
The plot of this film is quite interesting because it explores a friendship between people who have such a large age gap between them.
They also make the viewer constantly feel uncomfortable with this relationship in order to keep us curious as to why this bothers us.
Th story itself plays out quite well and keeps things interesting as we watch this unusual friendship between two somewhat lost souls slowly build throughout the course of the film.
I really enjoyed the idea that despite the generational gap between the characters both of the main characters feel lost in their lives as they both strive to understand what is missing in order to make things feel normal for them.
Bottom Line – Interesting film that works while still feels a bit uncomfortable the entire time. O’Toole is truly amazing in this film and once again was able to prove what kind of actor he was and that he was willing to take risks for roles that might be somewhat different and controversial. The story plays out quite well and it’s quite interesting to watch this newly found friendship for two somewhat lost souls develop. Recommended!
MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – This marked Peter O’Toole’s eighth and final nomination for a Best Actor Academy Award. The first was for Lawrence of Arabia (1962) 44 years earlier. He lost every time and therefore holds the record for the most Academy Award acting nominations without a win. However, received an honorary Oscar for his lifetime work in 2002. (From IMDB)
Rating – Globe Worthy (7/10)
