Down to Earth (2001)

“I got hit by a truck, I got smashed by a car, I got shot. And now you want to take my soul? What are you, the Blair Witch?” – Lance

Number of Times Seen – 1 (28 Mar 2018)

Brief Synopsis – A struggling comedian is accidentally taken to Heaven early and must choose a new body to take over.

My Take on it – This is the second remake of the film Here Comes Mr. Jordan (1941) and isn’t nearly as good as the other remake or the original.

The idea to use the premise and re-imagine it in the comedy world is actually a really interesting idea yet it ultimately doesn’t work as well here as it does in the sports world (boxing or football).

Chris Rock is actually quite funny in the lead role and the way he uses his own comedy routines helps make the viewer laugh every now and then.

The chemistry between Rock and Regina King also doesn’t work well enough for us to believe.

I did enjoy the way that they retained many of the major elements of the original story and translated the into relevant aspects of this story despite the fact that overall it doesn’t wor as well as one would hope.

Besides Rock, Chazz Palminteri and Eugene Levy are both also quite funny in their supporting roles.

Bottom Line – Interesting idea of a way to remake two classic films but it just doesn’t work as well as they did. Rock is funny in the lead role and since he obviously uses his own comedy material, it works well.  The story doesn’t work as well in the comedy world as opposed to the sports world and it shows.  Palminteri and Levy are quite funny in their small but important roles. The fact that they decided to retain some of the original story and find ways to translate them to the comedy world help make this slightly better even if overall that transition isn’t perfect for this kind of story.

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – Chris Rock was inspired to remake Heaven Can Wait (1978) after he heard that Muhammad Ali originally pursued to star in that film. Rock then thought that Richard Pryor would have been great in the role and changed the main character into an African-American comedian. (From IMDB)

Rating – BAFTA Worthy (6/10)
