Flight (2012)

“Nobody could’ve landed that plane like I did.” – Whip

Number of Times Seen – 2 (23 Dec 2012 and 3 Apr 2018)

Brief Synopsis – A pilot suffering from addiction and personal problems saves a planeload of passengers yet questions arise as to his sobriety at the time.

My Take on it – This is a film that works despite some of its obvious flaws.

Denzel Washington does a nice job with the non-standard character arc and we admire his character even as things continue to spiral further and further downward.

The story itself stays focused throughout and works almost the entire time because we get to know more and more about the character and why he acts as he does.

This is a film that gives the viewer so much to ponder about how we entrust our lives and our safety quite often to people that we never truly know what it going on in their lives or heads at the time which is quite a scary thought.

The special effects used for the plane crash are amazing to watch and come across as seeming quite realistic.

The supporting cast help Washington move his character arc along and John Goodman has a small part that manages to steal every one of the few scenes he appears in.

Bottom Line – Washington is great here and the story itself follows a non-standard arc which works well. The special effects used for the plan crash are amazing to watch. Definitely gives the viewer much to ponder about the fact that we place so much trust in other human beings to keep us safe when we never really know what is going on in their lives at that time.  Great supporting cast helps Washington’s character arc move forward. Goodman steals the few scenes he appears in. Recommended!

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – Writer John Gatins was inspired by a pilot who happened to be a fellow passenger on a flight. The pilot went on about his family life and issues, which gave Gatins pause and made him realize that whenever he is on a plane, he has to entrust himself to a stranger, who is only human, after all.  (From IMDB)

Rating – Globe Worthy (7/10)
