“People come to the Oasis for all the things they can do, but they stay for all the things they can be. ” – Parzival
Number of Times Seen – 1 (2 Apr 2018)
Brief Synopsis – In the near future, the creator of a virtual reality world presents a challenge to the millions of users after he dies
My Take on it – This is a film that I’ve been anticipating to see ever since I read the novel by Ernest Cline a few years ago.
They do an amazing job of translating the story to the screen because they make vast changes in the story yet still stay true to the spirit, adventure and thrills of the novel. (along with the 80’s nostalgia)
Steven Spielberg has been an amazing storyteller for decades and this film proves that he hasn’t lost his touch.
The special effects are amazing to watch and this film is filled with so many pop culture references to the 80’s that it will take multiple watches of this film to even scratch the surface of catching even a glimpse of them all.
Due to the differences of the written and visual media, there is no way that this film could be an exact translation of the novel and they do an amazing job making it still stay true to the novel while also keeping it a manageable runtime of slightly less than 2.5 hours.
The music is a wonderful blend of popular 80’s music with a modern score that helps keep the adventurous feeling of the film.
This film has a great message about the dangers of over reliance on technology in our lives and works really well eventhough it is a far different message than the one presented by the novel.
The added ideas of living in the importance of living in the present instead of solely in the past is also quite prevalent here.
This is a film that I can’t wait to see again and hope it will happen soon.
This is one of the best films of 2018 IMHO and I won’t be surprised at all if it remains in my Top Ten films by the end of the year.
Bottom Line – Amazing adaptation of a thrilling book to the screen. Spielberg does it again by creating something that allows our imagination to run wild. The special effects are wondrous to watch and the plethora of pop culture references are vast that multiple watches will be needed to try and even capture a glimpse of them all. Loved the way that this films story deviates from the novel, yet still remains true to it due to the need to keep it under 2 and a half hours long. The music is a great blend of 80’s fare coupled with a modern adventure tune that blends together really well. Love the message of this film which resonates so well despite being very different from the message of the novel itself. Can’t wait to see this one again really soon. One of the best films of 2018 (so far) and stands a high chance to make my top ten at the end of the year. Highly Highly Recommended!
MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – In an interview, Steven Spielberg said this was the third most difficult movie he has made in his career, behind Jaws (1975) and Saving Private Ryan (1998). (From IMDB)
Rating – Oscar Worthy (10/10)
