Did They Get it Right? – Best Actor – Oscars 2004

Here are the five nominees: (Winner in Bold)

Don Cheadle (Hotel Rwanda)
Johnny Depp (Finding Neverland)
Leonardo DiCaprio (The Aviator)
Clint Eastwood (Million Dollar Baby)
Jamie Foxx (Ray)

Biggest Snub:

Paul Giamatti – Sideways

My Overall Thoughts:

This is a year where once again one performance dominated all of the others and there was a clear winner from the starting gate.  The other nominess do very good jobs, but none were as amazing.

My Rankings:

Acting Performances

5. Leonardo DiCaprio
4. Clint Eastwood
3. Don Cheadle
2. Johnny Depp
1. Jamie Foxx

Movies

5. The AviatorThis is a great idea for a story because there is so much to explore here. That is also the problem with the way that it is presented since the film clocks in at nearly 3 hours and it feels that way. There are too many scenes that move along too slowly and keep the pacing of it all at a breakneck crawl. Great cast helps this along with Blanchett becoming to first actor to win an Oscar for portraying an Oscar winner. They do a wonderful job showing the eccentricities of Hughes but this would have probably been much better if it was tackled as a miniseries instead of a long feature length film.
4. RayAmazing performance by Foxx but the storyline is a bit choppy and uneven because it doesnt gave enough time to tell the whole story.
3. Hotel Rwanda – Powerful true story that is quite engaging and also emotional
2. Million Dollar BabyPowerful and movie film about decisions in life and living with those decisions.
1. Finding NeverlandThis is such a great and inspirational movie that presents us with the basis for one of the greatest children’s stories about trying to keep the spark of childhood wonderment in all of us no matter our age. Depp is excellent here and has great chemistry with the child actors. The script and music help transport us to another time and place. IMHO, one of the best movies of the year.

Do I agree with the Oscar winner? – YES!  This year we got to see Depp in one of his best roles ever, but nothing could beat Foxx as he definitely embodies Ray Charles in an outstanding performance.

Let me know what you think about these films and my rankings!

  1. True. This was Foxx’s year. He also scored a nom in the supporting actor category. But I thought Leo was his closest runner-up. He did some spectacular work with Hughes. I’d flip him with depp in your rankings and leave the rest the same.
