This is my 3947th Review
Thanks to Kieron of What About the Twinkie? for this recommendation.
“Flash, Flash, I love you, but we only have fourteen hours to save the Earth! ” – Dale
Number of Times Seen – at least 3 times (Cable in the 80’s and 9 Apr 2018)
Brief Synopsis – A football star is kidnapped and taken to a planet where he might fight the king of the Universe who wishes to destroy Earth.
My Take on it – This is a film that I recall seeing a few times as a kid and was a bit excited to see what I would think of it now as an adult.
The story comes across as being way too campy and lots of it just doesn’t work at all.
The storyline itself is good but the execution of it all is terrible and in some instances even laughable.
The dialogue and acting is extremely wooden and its hard to expect much from the actors (despite a few of them actually being good ones like Topol, Timothy Dalton, Max Von Sydow and Brian Blessed.)
The special effects are horrible and that even takes away from the realistic feeling that one should be able to get from a sci-fi film like this.
The best part of this film is the music by Queen and I found myself only wanting to continue watching for the music than for anything that was happening on the screen.
I heard a rumpor that this is going to be remade and I wonder if someone making this nowadays would be able to give us an even better and more intelligent story besides updated special effects.
Bottom Line – Really campy film that just doesn’t work well enough. The cast is all quite wooden and the dialogue is hilarious to listen to. The music by Queen is the best part of this film. The special effects are quite lame and takes away from any kind of realism that one would hope to get from a sci-fi story like this one.
MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – George Lucas loved the old Universal Flash Gordon serials as a kid, and wanted to make a modern version based on the original comic strips. Federico Fellini was optioning the rights at the time, so Lucas wrote Star Wars (1977) instead. (From IMDB)
Rating – Razzie Worthy (3/10)
