Number of Times Seen – 1 (12 Apr 2018)

Brief Synopsis – Biopic of a now famous artist who due to medical arthritis was hidden away in the rural areas of Canada as a housekeeper in order to work on her skills.

My Take on it – This is a film that I’ve heard about for some time especially when people would discuss why Sally Hawkin’s performance in The Shape of Water (2017) wasn’t her best one.

The truth is that I still think that she gave a better performance as a mute woman in love with a fish-man but looking at both that performance and this one it is clear to see how great an actress she is.

This film is a quiet biopic of a quiet woman who through her artistic talent changed her seemingly dead-end path in life despite her medical ailment into a colorful life filled with hope and love.

In addition to Hawkins, Ethan Hawke given a great performance here as Maudie’s employer and future husband.

They do a great job of telling us this fascinating story as it moves along while also explaining what happens to her and why.

The film’s pacing is quite slow yet is still bearable largely due to the way that they present it to us.

Bottom Line – Interesting biopic that is accentuated by great performances by both Hawkins and Hawke.  Found it fascinating as the story moves along to explain what happened and why. The pacing is quite slow, but is still bearable due largely to the way it is presented to us.  Recommended!
