Movies From the Hat 7 – #21 – Darren’s Pick – Films Stars Don’t Die in Liverpool (2017)

This is my 3966th Review

Thanks to  Darren of Movie Reviews 101 for this recommendation.

Here are his thoughts on the film.

“Has anyone ever told you that you look like Lauren Bacall when you smoke?.” – Peter Turner

“Humphrey Bogart. And I didn’t like it then either.” – Gloria Grahame

Number of Times Seen – 1 (12 Apr 2018)

Brief Synopsis – After finding out that she is dying, a formerly famous actress travels to England to be with her former lover who’s an up and coming actor.

My Take on it – This is a film that I’ve been interested in seeing for quite some time since I knew that it supposedly features one of Annette Bening’s best performances ever.

Boy was that assessment correct.

Bening is wonderful here in the lead role and I’m a bit shocked that she basically didn’t get any award recognition for it (even a nomination would have been good).

It should be noted that she did get a BAFTA nomination for this role.

The way that the storyline jumps around a lot in time is a bit jarring because they overuse that effect to show us the different parts of past and present of the relationship betwen the two main characters, but is still effective in certain ways.

I liked the way that they show various scenes from different perspectives.

This helps us understand how the same events can be interpreted different by the people involved.

They also do a great job of making this feel not feel like a biopic because it helps make things even more impactful.

Bottom Line – This is a pretty good film largely due to the amazing performance by Bening who once again shows how she can transform herself.  The storyline jumps around in time a bit too much for its own good yet definitely does so with good reason.  The way they show various scenes from different perspectives works well because it explains how events can be interpreted differently by various people involved with it. Liked the way that this is a biopic that doesn’t feel like one at all. Recommended!

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – Before Annette Bening depicted Gloria Grahame in this film, she had used Grahame’s performance in The Big Heat (1953) as an inspiration for her own depiction of a femme fatale in The Grifters (1990). (From IMDB)

Rating – Globe Worthy (7/10)
