Movies From the Hat 7 – #27 – Damien’s Pick – Labor Day (2013)

This is my 3972nd Review

Thanks to Damien of Riley on Film for this recommendation.

Here are his thoughts on the film.

“I don’t think losing my father broke my mother’s heart, but rather losing love itself. ” – Henry

Number of Times Seen – 1 (15 Apr 2018)

Brief Synopsis – A young boy and single mother befriend an escape convict over the long labor weekend during the 1980’s.

My Take on it – When I started watching this film, I was actually under the impression that it was a sappy romance story and was caught totally by surprise at what the plot really was all about.

They are able to get the 80’s nostalgia just perfect while also giving us very developed characters.

The fact that they pace things well over the course of the days they all spend together helps with that development and we can understand why they make the choices that they do.

The cats is great with both Josh Brolin and Kate Winslet giving solid performances.

The stand out here thou is young Gattlin Griffith who is perfectly cast in the role of the younger self of the lead character.

He is believable as a young man grappling with the life of a child of divorce from the 80’s and I can’t wait to see what else he can give us in future roles.

They balance the ideas of the divorce quite well and it all comes about quite realistically.

Bottom Line – Really enjoyable film because it gets the nostalgia right along with the development of the characters. The cast is great with Winslet and Brolin both giving solid performances, but the standout is obviously Griffith who is such a great protagonist. The story moves along at a great pace and we are given enough time to get to know the characters and understand the choices that they eventually make. Great 80’s feeling of a characters dealing with the repercussions of divorce which gives us so much to think about. Recommended!

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – Jason Reitman prepared his cast and crew by screening them films he considered relevant to the project. These included Stand by Me (1986), Running on Empty (1988), The Tree of Life (2011), The Night of the Hunter (1955) and Body Heat (1981). (From IMDB)

Rating – Globe Worthy (8/10)

  1. I think you saw this one similarly to how I did. I liked it because though it looks like a romance from a distance, it’s really a movie about forgiveness and starting over after life mistakes./bumps in the road. All that and there is still a romance factor.
