This is my 3980th Review
Thanks to Richard of Kirkham: A Movie A Day for this recommendation.
Number of Times Seen – 1 (16 Apr 2018)
Brief Synopsis – A banker meets a woman who claims to be his long lost aunt and travels with her on adventures around Europe.
My Take on it – This is yet another film that I had never heard of before it was recommended to me and I expected it to be even more enjoyable that it was.
The plot is ok but it feels as if they have strung together too many storylines into one film and they don’t always flow as well as they probably could have.
The pacing of this film is all over the place and sometimes it moves very slowly while others, it speeds through.
The cast is largely just average but Dame Maggie Smith really stands out as the eccentric aunt who doesn’t seem to have a care in the world.
Nice to see Cindy Williams and Lou Gosset Jr. in smallish roles which seem quite different from what we are used to seeing them do.
The biggest problem with this film is that it feels as if it doesn’t know whether is wants to be a comedy or a drama and it suffers because it can’t really be both.
I unfortunately had much higher expectations that this would be more enjoyable and was slightly disappointed by the end result.
Bottom Line – Not as enjoyable as I would have hoped. The plot is fine but it keeps moving at a strange pace throughout. The cast is ok but Smith definitely stands out as the eccentric aunt. Nice seeing both Gosset and Williams in small parts that are very different from what we are use to seeing them portray. The biggest problem here is that the film has trouble deciding whether is wants to be a drama or a comedy and doesn’t work as both.
MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – Source novel author Graham Greene said that he hated the movie, though he admitted that he walked out after five minutes. (From IMDB)
Rating – BAFTA Worthy (6/10)
