This is my 3984th Review
Thanks to Reut for recommending this film to me!
Number of Times Seen – 1 (17 Apr 2018)
Brief Synopsis – A retired rock star thinks about what is missing in his life after his father, a Holocaust survivor passes away.
My Take on it – This is yet another film that I knew absolutely nothing about when it was recommended to me and wasn’t too sure what I would get out of it.
The premise is quite good and is very unique in its approach to Nazi hunting while having the main character also journey down the path of self discovery at the same time.
Sean Penn is great here and despite his character looking very extreme, his performance is subtle and once one gets over the Rock Star look, it’s easy to feel for the character as he seeks meaning and purpose in his life.
The journey that his character takes both physically and emotionally feels very fresh and unique which helps make it work even better.
Loved the way that this film goes places you never expect as it constantly surprises along the way.
This helps make the film even more enjoyable to watch unfold.
Bottom Line – Very quirky idea that actually works quite well. Penn is great in the lead and despite the Rock Star look that he takes on, we can really feel for his character as he tries to figure out what is important in life. The journey of self discovery that he takes as he searches for the man who humiliated his father during WWII is an interesting one especially since it all feels very unique. This film goes places that are very unexpected and that helps make this enjoyable to watch. Recommended!
MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – When Cheyenne is talking with David Byrne, he reveals he lives tortured by the suicide of two teens who were fans of him. This is a recreation of a real-life incident that happened in 1985 in Reno, where two young ones called Raymond Belknap and James Vance made a suicide pact after listening to Judas Priest’s songs. (From IMDB)
Rating – Globe Worthy (8/10)
