Brief Synopsis – A young orphan is sent to an orphanage and while there learns about life and what true friendship is all about.
My Take on it – This is a film that I’ve been meaning to see for quite some time yet never got around to it.
The story told works really well and they rightly chose to keep the runtime short at slightly over and hour instead of dragging things along.
The story itself deals with some very dark themes yet manages to look at them with a positive viewpoint where things can always get better.
This film touches upon the ideas of orphans, crime, drug use and even alludes to wrongful treatment of minors yet still manages to stay focused on finding the bright spots ion life despite all of the dark ones.
This is a message that shines through throughout the entire film and eventhough it’s animated, I wouldn’t necessarily claim that this is a film that most kids will fully grasp what is going on.
The voice cast is great with Will Forte, Nick Offerman, Ellen page, Amy Sedaris and Erick Abbate as Zucchini are all great and they make for a very emotional ride here.
I can now fully understand how this film could have been nominated for best Animated Feature film at the Oscars, Golden Globes and the BAFTA’s that year despite not really having a chance to win against Zootopia (2016) that year.
Bottom Line – Great story that doesn’t drag things out at all and has the perfect runtime of just over an hour. The story works really well and despite is dealing with themes like orphans, crime and other seemingly “dark” issues, they keep things on the “light” side of it all. Great message about life and trying to find the bright spots despite all of the darkness around. Recommended!
