Pacific Rim: Uprising (2018)

“Fire everything you’ve got! ” – Jake

Number of Times Seen – 1 (24 Apr 2018)

Brief Synopsis – Ten years after the breach has been closed, a new threat appears forcing the Jaeger pilots back into action to try and save the world.

My Take on it – I am a really big fan of the first movie of this series and was highly anticipating this sequel to see how they would advance the story even further along.

Unfortunately, like many sequels made these days, this is a completely unnecessary film because it doesn’t manage to come even close to matching the ideas and actions of the original.

This film tries to rehash too much of the previous film’s plot and storyline and doesn’t feel unique at all in its approach to the storyline.

The special effects are wondrous to watch and that isn’t a surprise but besides cool effects, this film has little to offer us.

The new cast is fine, but again, none of them stand out as much as the ones in the original do.

The closest character that comes to it is John Boyega, who, in an attempt to break free of his Star Wars stigma, does an interest imitation of Idris Elba’s accent from the first film.

Even Charlie Day and Burn Gorman who work so well in the previous film together lack the effect that they had in that film when they are reunited in this film.

Bottom Line – Totally unnecessary sequel to a great first film. They rehash too much of the previous story into this and despite having great special effects, this just doesn’t work as well.  The new cast is fine, but they still don’t feel as connected as characters in this kind of world should be and no one really stands out besides Boyega and that’s only due to his attempt to imitate Elba’s accent.  Even Day and Gorman don’t have as great a chemistry as they did in the original.

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – The conscripted scavenger character, Amana Namani, played by actress Cailee Spaeny, innovatively pilots her self-made Jaeger, that has the call sign “Scrapper,” a term very aptly used from orthodox western boxing, which describes a fighter that is small in stature but has strong willpower. These attributes are frequently shown or referenced during the movie. (From IMDB)

Rating – BAFTA Worthy (5/10)
