Rififi (1955)

“Don’t cry, he just learned some women have guts.” – Jo

Number of Times Seen – 1 (24 Apr 2018)

Brief Synopsis – A recently released convict gets a group of thieves together in order to try and commit the perfect jewel heist.

My Take on it – This is a film that I’ve been interested in seeing for years and finally had the opportunity to do so.

The way that this heist film is presented is amazing because they seem to have gotten so much right.

The story moves along at a great pace and manages to develop each of the characters really well in unique ways as things go forward.

Many other heist films have tried to copy the way that this film tells its tale, but very few manage to do it as well as they did here because they manage to reach levels of realism that few achieve.

The heist scenes themselves are superbly choreographed and they come across as being extremely  genuine ion the way that it all is presented to us.

This is definitely one of the very best heist movies ever made and it stays intriguing the whole time.

Bottom Line – Amazing heist film that gets so much right. Loved the way that the story moves along at a great pace while developing each of the main characters in unique ways. This is a heist film that has been copied so many times over the year but very few manage to reach the levels that this one does. The heist scenes themselves are superbly performed and it makes things feel really genuine due to the way it is done.  One of the best heist films ever. Highly Recommended!

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – The much imitated heist sequence is over 32 minutes long and contains not a single line of dialogue or music. The production crew and composer Georges Auric thought it would be a disaster to have such a long sequence sans dialogue. Auric insisted that he allow him to write a grand piece of music for the scene and he eventually did on his own. Later Dassin played the part for Auric twice, once with the score, once without. Auric turned to him and admitted, “Without the music”. (From IMDB)

Rating – Oscar Worthy (9/10)
