The Parent Trap (1998)

“I have a brilliant beyond brilliant idea! ” – Hallie

Number of Times Seen – 1 (24 Apr 2018)

Brief Synopsis – Two girls attending summer camp discover that they are long separated identical twins and conspire to reunite their parents.

My Take on it – After having recently watched the original film that this movie is a remake of I can see many of the similarities and differences between the two.

This one is much more of a disappointing film largely due to the fact that they aren’t able to add anything new and fresh to the premise as one would expect.

Lindsay Lohan is fine in her film debut in the dual role of the twins yet she isn’t as charismatic in the role as Hayley Mills was in the original.

Dennis Quaid and Natasha Richardson are both great actors but they don’t manage to have enough chemistry to make us believe them as a couple either years prior to the setting or even during the course of the story.

This is the kind of premise that works much better being set in the world of the 1960’s than in the modern world and it probably should have been kept there.

Bottom Line – Disappointing remake that does little to add to the premise as could be expected. Lohan is fine here and isn’t as charismatic as Mills was in the same role. Quaid and Richardson are both great actors but they don’t have enough chemistry together to make us believe that they were ever together or even that they should be.  This kind of premise is much more believable in the realm of the 1960’s than it could be in the modern world.

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – The twins in this version are named after the daughters of director Nancy Meyers’ and producer Charles Shyer, Annie Meyers-Shyer, and Hallie Meyers-Shyer, both of whom have small parts in the movie. Hallie plays a girl at camp at the beginning who asks where the Navajo bunk is, and Annie plays the towel girl at the hotel who brings Elizabeth the first aid kit. The character whom Hallie Meyers-Shyer plays, conversely, is named Lindsay, after Lindsay Lohan, the actress who plays Hallie and Annie.  (From IMDB)

Rating – BAFTA Worthy (5/10)

  1. I haven’t seen either film in a while, but I would disagree that the remake is a disappointment compared to the original (and I still had a big crush on Hayley Mills when I saw the original and recently had the pleasure of seeing her in a play Off-Broadway (very good BTW) and speaking to her afterwards, when she was kind enough to sign my Playbill AND my DVD copy of Pollyanna). This remake made Lindsay Lohan a star. I thought she did a beautiful job in it playing the “twins” and figured she’d be a rising young star for many years and had the acting chops to transition into grown up roles. She should have. But she derailed her own career. The remake was a favorite of my children when they were all younger (0ne was born the year it was released).
