“We may not always get what we want. We may not always get what we need. Just so’s we don’t get what we deserve! ” – Tim
Number of Times Seen – At least 5 times (Cable in the 90’s, 13 Sep 2009 and 26 Apr 2018)
Brief Synopsis – Two best friends from college have their friendship tested as they both move up the political ladder.
My Take on it – This is a film that I have always enjoyed because of the way that it shows the effect of political capital on two men and how they each choose to wield that power differently.
It really all depends on what kind of ambition one seems to have in life.
Great how we get to know the characters quite well even via subtle scenes that prove to us who they are deep down.
John Cusack is great in this role because it is so very different from the kind of roles that he is usually cast in.
James Spader is also great in his role because we can also understand where he is coming from.
It’s quite easy to believe that these two characters have formed a close bond over the time they spend together and we see how that bond increases and sometimes lessens as they go through the ups and downs of life in the political world.
This film gives us a really nice and somewhat unique perspective on how the US political system can work and depending on your motives, that can be for either the better or for the worse.
Bottom Line – Great premise that shows how money and power can change a person or not depending on their ambitions in life. Cusack and Spader are superb in the title roles and we can easily believe their friendship as it grows over the course of the film largely due to the way that the characters are developed. Gives us a nice perspective on how the political system can work both for better and for worse. Recommended!
MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – The name of the campaign slogan for electoral candidate Peter Burton (John Cusack)’s “Burton ’90” political contest for the 1990 election was “Tomorrow’s Looking Good!”. (From IMDB)
Rating – Globe Worthy (8/10)

Two great actors! I’m not a fan of political movies, but I’m totally willing to give this a try because of these two.
