Number of Times Seen – 2 (4 Nov 2009 and 29 Apr 2018)
Brief Synopsis – In a dystopian future in Japan, a group of students are brought to a secluded island where they must kill each other until only one is left alive and declared the winner.
My Take on it – This is an amazing film that isn’t the easily kind to watch yet it is still quite satisfying.
This movie has a similar kind of plot to the Hunger Games yet takes place in modern times with modern weaponry.
The idea that all of the characters are not just randomly chosen but rather all know each other which helps raise the stakes of it all since it gives it all a more emotional impact.
The action in this film is extremely brutal but within the framework of the film it all works really well.
Really loved the way that this film finds clever ways to keep the viewer updated as to who is still alive and as the numbers dwindle, the tension rises even more as the minutes tick by.
The added bonus of giving us some extra tidbits and information about the background of some of the characters during the action works really well in helping us form an even stronger connection with some of the characters even though we know only one will survive in the end.
Bottom Line – Amazing film that works really well. This feels very similar to the idea of The Hunger Games, yet is set in more modern times and all of the characters actually know each other which makes their live and death situations even more emotional. The action is quite brutal yet is all works really well within the framework of the film. Love the way that this film finds clever ways to keep the viewer updated as the numbers dwindle while also every so often giving us more information about the characters as they want us to feel a stronger emotional connection to a few of them. Highly Recommended!
MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – Many members of the Japanese Parliament tried to get the novel banned, but to no avail. When the film was released, they attempted to ban it also. Both efforts resulted in the novel and film becoming even more successful as people bought the book and went to the movie to see what the fuss was all about. (From IMDB)
Rating – Oscar Worthy (9/10)
