Blood Diamond (2006)

“Sometimes I wonder… will God ever forgive us for what we’ve done to each other? Then I look around and I realize… God left this place a long time ago” – Danny Archer

Number of Times Seen – 2 (28 Dec 2006 and 1 May 2018)

Brief Synopsis – A fisherman captured by rebel forces in Sierra Leone and forced to mine diamonds for them, tries to escape and find his family.

My Take on it – This is a film that is quite enjoyable despite the fact that it preaches too much politics throughout.

They are able to give us a nice perspective on the entire situation dealing with conflict diamonds and we get to see things from various viewpoints; a fisherman, reporter, mercenary/smuggler, the army, the rebels and even through the yes of a newly recruited young rebel.

the cats of this film is just ok and the biggest standout is Djimon Hounsou who is great as a fisherman trying to find his family through the chaos of civil war.

I’m still a bit confused as to why DiCaprio was able to get an Oscar nomination for this film yet fail to get one for The Departed (2006) which also came out that year since his performance there is much more powerful, emotional and commanding than it is here.

The situation in Africa regarding the diamond mines is quite a complex one and they do a pretty good job of trying to show us the way the situation truly is.

Unfortunately, things haven’t changed very much in that region of the world and things are still just as messed up.

Bottom Line – Enjoyable film despite it’s over politicizing.  Gives a nice perspective on the whole situation because we get to see the views of numerous key players in the whole drama of conflict diamonds.  Cast is fine here and Hounsou stands out among them all.  Not sure why Dicaprio got an Oscar nomination for this film and not the Departed (2006), because he had a much more powerful and commanding role in that film than he does here. Shows the complexity of the situations very well and unfortunately things in the world haven’t changed as much as one would hope. Recommended!

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – Jennifer Connelly suffered a neck injury while filming a car chase scene with Leonardo DiCaprio. (From IMDB)

Rating – Globe Worthy (7/10)
