Did They Get it Right? – Best Actor – Oscars 1987

Here are the five nominees: (Winner in Bold)

Michael Douglas (Wall Street)
William Hurt (Broadcast News)
Marcello Mastroianni (Dark Eyes)
Jack Nicholson (Ironweed)
Robin Williams (Good Morning, Vietnam)

Biggest Snub:

Steve Martin – Roxanne

My Overall Thoughts:

This was a year where it ultimately came down to two great performances. Both Douglas and Williams showed how amazing they can be as actors and ultimately the decision needed to be between a dramatic or a dramatic role with heavy comedic overtones.

My Rankings:

Acting Performances

5. Marcello Mastroianni
4. William Hurt
3. Jack Nicholson
2. Robin Williams
1. Michael Douglas

Movies

5. Dark Eyes (Not Yet Seen)
4. Ironweed – Nicholson and Streep are quite good together as down on their luck vagrants trying to get their lives back together.
3. Broadcast NewsInteresting love triangle movie. Not as good as I recalled, but still done extremely well.
2. Wall Street  – Not Stone’s best and far from being the most intense, but his creation of Gordon Gecko is an amazing achievement on its own. The movie is fast paced and gives us a very quick overview into the world of financial and corporate deals. Douglas is amazing here and definitely deserved his Best Actor Oscar for this role. Liked seeing the Sheens work together but even here the father’s portrayal of the moral compass is much more engaging than the son’s portrayal of the money hungry egotistical broker.
1. Good Morning, VietnamPlot is a bit weak, but Williams performance makes you not care about that at all. Hilarious ad-libbed dialogue is perfect. Amazing soundtrack!

Do I agree with the Oscar winner? – Most Definitely!  Douglas’ performance epitomized the yuppy life of the 80’s and did it so spot on that even after 30 years, its chilling to watch because it’s so amazing a performance.
