Brief Synopsis – After suffering a devastating injury in a car accident, a talented neurosurgeon tries to find a way to regain the use of his hands via mystical sources.

My Take on it – This is a film that I wanted to rewatch before eventually seeing the latest MCU film, Avengers: Infinity War (2018) in order to keep things fresh in mind.

When I watched this the first time, I enjoyed it a lot, but the complexity of the storyline took away from me thinking it was amazing.

On this rewatch, I got to enjoy it more for what it is and I now think that it’s an amazing movie that is one of the best in the entire MCU.

The way that the story brings the mystical arts into the fold of the MCU works really well because it adds a whole new dimension to the entire series.

The uniqueness of the storyline is great and allows us to see a stand alone MCU film that brings new information about the world they live in which only slightly touches upon the overall MCU storyline.

Benedict Cumberbatch is amazing as the lead character and he proves that he was the perfect choice for such a character because he is able to play the entire arc of the character’s journey really well.

They do an excellent job explaining the complex world of mysticism while not making it feel too descriptive and burdensome.

The special effects are amazing to watch and the added use of modern science helps make things feel plausible and realistic.

Can’t wait to see the characters introduced here are integrated into the overall MCU.

Bottom Line – Amazing addition to the MCU. Cumberbatch is great as the mysterious Doctor Strange and plays the character arc really well. Loved the way that this film works really well as a stand alone story yet is interconnected to the overall theme of the MCU.  The added use of mystical powers helps make this feel very unique and adds a whole new dimension to the world of the MCU.  They do a great job explaining the complex world of mysticism and keep things interesting the entire time.  The special effects are superb and make us believe the idea of it all especially since their expert use of modern science also adds to the realism of it all. So much more fun on the second viewing. Highly Recommended!

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia –  The filmmakers defined the use of magic as dimensional travelling and shifting. “We didn’t want magic to simply be people throwing and blocking bolts of lightning; this is the ability to tap into different dimensions and pull aspects of those dimensions into our realm.” (From IMDB)

Rating – Oscar Worthy (9/10) (upgrade from original review)

  1. I rewatched the MCU movies in preparation for Infinity War too, so I think it does help. I also liked Doctor Strange more on a rewatch, especially since I missed things the first time. I think you’ll like Infinity War. 😉
