Anon (2018)

“You invade my privacy, it’s nothing. I try to get it back, it’s a crime. ” – The Girl

Number of Times Seen – 1 (7 May 2018)

Brief Synopsis – In a futuristic world where everyone’s lives are completely connected to the internet, a police detective must try and find a murderer who is invisible to the technology.

My Take on it – This is a film that hooked me based solely on its premise but disappoints for the same reason.

The idea of a society where everyone and everything is connected via technology seems to be a world to which we are heading, but the way that the story unfolds just doesn’t work at all.

Clive Owen and Amanda Seyfried are both great actors but they don’t have enough material rto work with in this story.

The plot gets more and more convoluted as things move along and also make the viewer question why certain things are allowed to actually happen.

The future that is presented here actually seems quite plausible based on the direction of how things are going nowadays and that’s actually quite a scary thing to think about.

The explanations given for many of the actions of the characters and the events that occur aren’t really plausible.

The idea that crime can be eliminated based on a “big brother” system is also an interesting idea yet they don’t really discuss such issues on a deep enough level to make things more interesting which is quite a shame because that would be more intriguing to watch.

Bottom Line – Great premise that just doesn’t work at all. Owen and Seyfried do their best here but this film keeps the mystery of it all too confusing instead of interesting. The fact that the future depicted here could become reality is a scary one to consider but it still seems plausible.  They miss an easy opportunity to debate the various issues involved with how technology could eliminate crime due to a “big brother” kind of society which would have made this films story more intriguing.

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – Marks the second time Amanda Seyfred works with Niccol. She had previously started in 2011’s In Time. (From IMDB)

Rating – BAFTA Worthy (5/10)
