Did They Get it Right? – Best Actor – Oscars 1979

Here are the five nominees: (Winner in Bold)

Dustin Hoffman (Kramer vs. Kramer)
Jack Lemmon (The China Syndrome)
Al Pacino (And Justice for All)
Roy Scheider (All That Jazz)
Peter Sellers (Being There)

Biggest Snub:

Martin Sheen – Apocalypse Now

My Overall Thoughts:

Great year of nominees. Hoffman easily gives the best performance but Sellers shows that he can be a great serious actor with this role which proves how amazing an actor he truly was.

My Rankings:

Acting Performances

5. Jack Lemmon
4. Al Pacino
3. Roy Scheider
2. Peter Sellers
1. Dustin Hoffman

5. All That JazzGood music and choreography, but I felt the plot was missing key elements. Great performance by Scheider, but that’s pretty much all this movie has to offer. This is supposedly somewhat of an autobiography of Director Bob Fosse near death breakdown in the mid-70’s.
4. And Justice for All – Pacino is great in this slightly over the top performance about a lawyer trying to deal with a corrupt system.
3. The China Syndrome – Interesting idea for a film that doesn’t age as well as one would hope despite the premsie still being somewhat relevant today.
2. Being There – Sellers is amazing in this film and shows how talented an actor he was.  The story is fascinating to watch unfold
1. Kramer vs. Kramer Depicts some of the hard aspects of divorce from a father’s perspective. Done very well. Amazing cast led by Hoffman and Streep.

Do I agree with the Oscar winner? – Most Definitely!  Very talented group of nominees this year but none of the performances are as powerful, realistic and emotional as Hoffman’s was.
