Did They Get it Right? – Best Actor – Oscars 1976

Here are the five nominees: (Winner in Bold)

Robert De Niro (Taxi Driver)
Peter Finch (Network)
Giancarlo Giannini (Seven Beauties)
William Holden (Network)
Sylvester Stallone (Rocky)

Biggest Snub:

Dustin Hoffman – Marathon Man

My Overall Thoughts:

This was another great year filled with some powerful performances. Finch was superb in his final role and despite De Niro giving a creepy performance that still is chilling today, Finch also got te sentimental vote since he passed away not long after the film hit theaters.

My Rankings:

Acting Performances

5. Sylvester Stallone
4. Giancarlo Giannini
3. William Holden
2. Robert De Niro
1. Peter Finch

4. Seven BeautiesInteresting story that show the lengths some people will go to in order to try and survive desperate situations. The story is told very well and I liked how it works in a semi non-linear fashion in order to help us understand the overall storyline and how things get to where they do. Giannani is great in the lead and was very deserving of his Best Actor Oscar Nomination. Wertmüller also does an amazing job directing this film and she was quite deserving of being the very first female director nominated for an Oscar.
3. Taxi DriverThis is hailed as one of Martin Scorsese’s best movies but I felt too much of a disconnect from the characters in order to love this one. Very gritty and dark look at the plight of veterans and of the harsh NYC nightlife of the 70’s. Bickle is a hero’s antihero who feels forced into his predicament by his war experiences, anti social attitude and his desire to be a protector of those he feels need protection.
2. RockyHad a new found appreciation for this film especially after watching the series as a whole. Really liked the way that this film deals more with going the distance than focusing n win or lose. Rocky is a great character and I loved his mild mannered way of courting the sister of his best friend. A great film, probably the best of the series, deserving of a Best Picture nomination, but still not the best of the year.
1. NetworkExcellent movie that truly portrays the lengths executives could possibly go to to get higher ratings. It’s movies like this that made Reality TV a possibility. Amazing cast which won 3 Oscars.

Do I agree with the Oscar winner? – Most Definitely!  I don’t think Finch won based on sentimental votes, I think his performance was somewhat prophetic of what would become of the TV industry in the decades to follow and he was quite powerful in this film. De Niro gave a great performance too (when doesn’t he), but eventhough the character of Travis Bickle still reverberates today, this was Finch’s year.

Let me know what you think about these films and my rankings!

  1. Not sure I agree. Was Finch excellent? Yes. But NETWORK’s prescience about the media was all in Chayefsky’s script. DeNiro was extraordinary and Stallone was perfect (I’d say letter perfect since he wrote the screenplay as well). Very tough choice amongst those 3, but if I’d had a vote – in a close call – I would’ve gone to Stallone.
