Number of Times Seen – 2 (10 Feb 2009 and 10 May 2018)
Brief Synopsis – A professor at a College in New England, travels to New York for a conference where he finds a young immigrant couple living in his apartment.
My Take on it – This is a film that has a great narrative and story and is elevated by the superb performance of the lead.
Richard Jenkins is amazing in this role and definitely deserved an Oscar nomination for his performance.
As a character actor, his talents and range are never seen in the forefront, but in this film, we get to see what kind of range e has and also see how great an actor he can be.
His character’s journey through the film is great to watch and we see him transform both physically and verbally throughout as he begins to open up towards the world on a whole and to make strong personal connections with others, something that he has moved far away from for some time.
The film’s underlying message about the way the post 9/11 system works (o doesn’t work) is done quite well and we get to see how much fear has taken over the reins of such issues even in situations when there is truly no reason for that fear to occur.
Bottom Line – Jenkins is superb in this film and shows how talented an actor he is. The story is an emotional roller coaster and it works so well due to the way that the characters are developed and depicted for us. This film has an underlying message about the way that the system works post-9/11 out of fear of foreigners even when there is no real cause for such fears. Loved the way that we get to see how the main character’s personality and expressions transform as he takes this journey that changes his attitudes towards the worked on a whole and specifically his newfound connection to other people. Recommended!
MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – According to the DVD’s interviews of both Tom McCarthy and Richard Jenkins, Walter’s change of glasses scene (which reveals his change of feelings for Mouna) was Richard Jenkins’s idea. (From IMDB)
Rating – Globe Worthy (8/10)
