Number of Times Seen – 1 (11 May 2018)
Brief Synopsis – A mother of three who is having trouble following the birth of her latest child hires a “night nanny” to try and alleviate the stress in her life.
My Take on it – This is a film that got me hooked as soon as I saw the trailer during Avengers: Infinity War (2018) largely due to the way it depicts motherhood and post birth.
My wife and I wanted to see a “light” comedy and this seemed like the perfect solution.
Unfortunately, the film shown in the trailer only lasts for half of the runtime and then the film completely switches gears.
They do a great job showing how motherhood and a newborn can adversely affect life.
Loved the way that unlike most movies, they don’t sugarcoat how difficult it can sometimes be raising children especially in the modern world we live in.
Charlize Theron is great in the lead role and she makes the overall story look and feel quite realistic.
The problem with this film is that near the midway point, it changes the way the story is being told and despite the fact that I can appreciate why they make the change, it comes across as being too drastic a move and that takes away from the way that the story worked prior to that point.
Unfortunately, it never manages to recover from that sin and ultimately feels too unsatisfying a film because it feels as if they have tried to somehow trick us into believing a story.
Bottom Line – Great premise that works much better during the first half of the film. Really liked the way that they don’t sugarcoat motherhood and let us see and understand how difficult things can sometimes be. Theron is great in the lead and its easy to believe that she is going through everything along with her character. At the midway point, this film takes a nose dive into uncharted territory and doesn’t manage to recover.
MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – Charlize Theron gained 50 pounds for the role. She adhered to an excessive diet of junk food, processed foods, In-N-Out Burger, and milkshakes. Theron would eat macaroni and cheese at 2 a.m. to help keep on the weight. Theron said that her youngest child had mistaken her for being pregnant, given the extensive weight gain, and that it took a year and a half for her to shed the weight. (From IMDB)
Rating – BAFTA Worthy (5/10)
