“He knew there’s only one way to fight a war, any war. With your gloves off. ” – Langford
Number of Times Seen – 1 (14 May 2018)
Brief Synopsis – During World War II, a company of soldiers try to get through enemy controlled Rangoon in order to return to allied lines.
My Take on it – This is a film that I came across by accident and expected it to be a mediocre war film, yet it surprised me in so many ways that I didn’t expect.
This is a film that does an excellent job showing certain sides of combat that were shied away from being displayed on the screen especially when this was made.
They are able to show aspects of war that really show why the adage ‘War is Hell’ is timeless and that it doesn’t matter where the battles are being fought or even when since this is such a very true motto.
They do a nice job developing the characters to a point where we get to see the unique opinions and reactions of each one of them about all that is happening around them.
Stanley Baker is superb in the lead and they don’t sugarcoat his character at all.
He is seen as a true commander who will do anything for his mission and for his men no matter the cost and constantly proves it over and over as this gripping story moves along.
Bottom Line – So much better than I had assumed it would be. This is such a great film because it shows sides of war that are usually not seen which furthers the idea that War is Hell no matter where and when it is being fought. The characters are developed well enough for us to get an idea as to the opinions of each of them about everything that is happening around them. Baker is superb in the lead and we are able to get a clear idea as to why he does all that he does along the way. Recommended!
MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – Stanley Baker regarded this as one of his best films, although he regretted they did not have a larger budget. (From IMDB)
Rating – Globe Worthy (8/10)
