Sitting Pretty (1948)

“Mr. Belvedere, is there anything you haven’t been? – Tacey King

“Yes, Mrs. King – I’ve never been an idler or a parasite.” – Lynn Belvedere

Number of Times Seen – 1 (5 Jun 2018)

Brief Synopsis – A married couple having trouble raising their rambunctious kids find a nanny to take care of them, but they soon find out that this live in babysitter is nothing like they expected.

My Take on it – This is yet another film that I knew nothing about when I sat down to watch it and only did so because Clifton Webb was nominated for a Best Actor Oscar for his performance.

Since I knew nothing about the plot, I was surprised over and over by things that kept happening and it was refreshing to see such a premise played out so well especially since it was made in the 40’s.

Love dthe way that this film manages to alludes to numerous kinds of situations and scenarios that one wouldn’t really expect to see in a film from the 40’s.

The cast is superb and Robert Young and Maureen O’Hara have great chemistry together as the couple but Webb definitely steals every scene he is in and deservingly was nominated for an Oscar for this performance.

This is a film that managed to spawn a few sequels showing what happens to the main character and also had an 80’s sitcom made based on the same idea that ended up lasting 6 seasons.

Bottom Line – Really fun film that surprised me over and over. Loved how this film manages to depict situations and scenarios that one wouldn’t expect from a film made in the late 1940’s. The cast is superb but obviously Webb stands out among them all and was very deserving in being nominated for Best Actor at the Oscars for this role.  Spawned a few sequels and even a TV show that lasted a few seasons in the 1980’s. Recommended!

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – This is one of the few (if any) films which shows what an accomplished dancer Clifton Webb was. During his Broadway career, he was known for his dancing and his singing, as well as his comedy. (From IMDB)

Rating – Globe Worthy (8/10)
