Life With Father (1947)

“They can’t keep me out of heaven on a technicality! ” Father

Number of Times Seen – 1 (10 Jun 2018)

Brief Synopsis – A businessman in New York runs his family like a business during the final decade of the 19th Century.

My Take on it – This is yet another film that I never had heard of before coming across the fact that star William Powell was nominated for an Oscar for Actor for his performance here.

Powell is wonderful here in this role and he gives a great performance as the patriarch of a wealthy family in New York who does all he can to make sure that his entire household works smoothly the entire time.

He was quite deserving of the nomination, but still wasn’t the best of the 5 nominees to warrant winning that year.

The dialogue of this story is superbly written and I loved the wit of much of it because it manages to be both serious and hilarious at the same time.

Some of the lines go by quite quickly that it pays to make sure that the film has your full attention so nothing gets accidentally missed.

There is definitely a good reason for the fact that the stage version of this film lasted on Broadway for so many performances and still holds the record as the longest non-musical play on Broadway. (see Trivia below)

Bottom Line – Powell is wonderful in the lead of this film as a father trying to make sure his household is run properly. The dialogue is superbly written and is so witty that you have to play close attention to catch it all. There’s a reason the stage version of this story was the longest running play in history for nearly 30 years. (see Trivia below). Recommended!

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – The original play, “Life With Father”, is the longest-running Broadway non-musical play ever. It played on Broadway for nearly eight years (3224 performances), from 1939-47, and held the record for 25 years until “Fiddler on the Roof” surpassed it. In the play, author Howard Lindsay played Father, Dorothy Stickney was Vinnie and Teresa Wright was Mary. The film version was released in 1947, the year the Broadway run ended. The original Broadway production is the 16th longest-running show ever as of February 2013. (From IMDB)

Rating – Globe Worthy (8/10)
