Mamma Mia! (2008)

“[to Tanya] Typical isn’t it? You wait 20 years for a dad and then three come along at once. ” – Rosie

Number of Times Seen – 2 (6 Nov 2008 and 12 Jun 2018)

Brief Synopsis – On the eve of her wedding day, a girl invites three men who could possibly be her father to the wedding in order to find out which one is her biological father.

My Take on it – This is a film that is much more enjoyable for its songs than for the overall story which is interesting yet very superficial.

They use the songs of ABBA to tell the story and sometimes they let the story flow and other times the music is more f a distraction.

The cast of this film is superb and Meryl Streep, Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth, Amanda Seyfield and Julie Walters are all great here.

They do a wonderful job blending the music of ABBA into a somewhat coherent storyline but the best art is that we get to hear the amazing songs from the group that were hits in the 70’s.

Te concept of making a film revolving around the music of one artist is a great one and I can’t wait to eventually see (when it’s made) a film version of Movin’ Out which is based on the music of Billy Joel.

I’m quite curious to see what they plan to do for the sequel of this film that is suppose to be released later this year and wonder how they will continue this story with more of ABBA’s hits.

Bottom Line – Interesting story told by the use of the music of the band ABBA that were popular in the 70’s. Great cast works quite well here.  The music is superbly blended into the story and we get to hear lots of the hits from ABBA that are so enjoyable to listen to.  Love the concept of making a musical out of songs from a single artist and can’t wait for the film version of Movin’ Out that uses Billy Joel’s songs in that way.  Will be quite interesting to see what the sequel of this film does to add to the storyline and musical timeline of these characters. Recommended!

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – Pierce Brosnan had no idea what the project was about when he signed on. The producers told him it was being filmed in Greece, and Meryl Streep was starring. Brosnan said he would’ve signed on for anything involving Streep, describing her as “that gorgeous blonde I fancied terribly in Drama School.” (From IMDB)

Rating – Globe Worthy (7/10)

  1. A whole lotta fun (if you get past the fact that Pierce Brosnan can’t sing to save his life). Always been an ABBA fan. Took my daughter to the musical on Broadway – they did a terrific job. Looking forward to the sequel – and Cher as Amanda Seyfried’s grandmother.
