“So is there a plan or are you guys just winging it? ” – John Oldman
Number of Times Seen – 1 (14 Jun 2018)
Brief Synopsis – Ten years after the previous film, John Oldman is ready to move on again, but his identity is compromised by curious students and the fact that he has noticed that he has begun to age.
My Take on it – This is a sequel to the superb film The Man From Earth (2007) which came out a decade ago.
Unfortunately, this film isn’t as good as its predecessor and it feels quite inferior when viewed side by side.
The idea to revisit the character of John Oldman after ten years is a great idea because we get to see how his life has progressed over this time especially from the standpoint of technology which makes things even more difficult and dangerous for a man in his position.
The philosophical and historical discussions in this film just aren’t as interesting and engaging as the ones ion the previous film and it actually hurts the way that one can see these characters due to that.
David Lee Smith is once again great in the lead role and plays his character in a way that we can actually believe that he is this ambiguous character that he presents us with.
Bottom Line – Great idea that just doesn’t work as well as the original and feels far inferior. It was great revisiting this character after a decade to see how things have changed especially from a technological standpoint. The discussions in this film aren’t as interesting as they were in the original which also hurts the way this film can be perceived. lee Smith is once again great in this very ambiguous kind of role because he is able to make both scenarios about his identity feel possible.
MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – The film was released on file sharing sites by the director Richard Schenkman, who stated, “In order to make sure that every single person in the world who wants to see the movie has access to stream or download it, we are uploading it ourselves to the filesharing community.” (From IMDB)
Rating – BAFTA Worthy (6/10)
