My Man Godfrey (1936)

“All you need to start an asylum is an empty room and the right kind of people.” – Alexander Bullock

Number of Times Seen – 1 (19 Jun 2018)

Brief Synopsis – A down on his luck man is hired as a butler for a wealthy family during the Depression.

My Take on it – This is yet another film that I had never heard of before watching it and ended up really enjoyed it.

The story remains fun the entire time and they manage to show how the Depression affected some parts of society much more heavily than others.

The plot plays out really well and they manage to find a way to keep thing humorous the entire time.

William Powell and (his ex-wife) Carole Lombard have amazing chemistry on screen and they are able to give us such a great screwball comedy that remains fun the entire time.

This film is a great parable for the difference in classes in society and how its possible to sometimes break through seemingly insurmountable barriers.

This film had 4 of its actors nominated for acting Oscars, one in each of the four categories.  Powell and Lombard got nominations along with Alice Brady and Misha Auer, but none of them were able to win their respective categories.

Bottom Line – Great and fun story that manages to show how the Depression affected some more parts of society more severely than others. The way that the story plays out works really well and stays humorous the entire time. The chemistry between Powell and (his ex-wife) Lombard is great onscreen and they are able to give us such a great screwball comedy feeling throughout the film. This film is a great parable for the difference in classes in society and how its possible to try and break through such seemingly insurmountable barriers. Both Powell and Lombard were nominated for Oscars for this film as were Auer and Brady, but none managed to win. Recommended!

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – This is the only film to receive Oscar nominations for writing, directing and all four acting awards without being nominated for Best Picture. It was also the only film to receive those six nominations without winning in any of the categories until American Hustle (2013). (From IMDB)

Rating – Globe Worthy (8/10)
