Under Suspicion (2000)

“Go home. Put on a funny hat. Do whatever it is morons do.” – Captain Victor Benezet

Number of Times Seen – 2 (21 Oct 2001 and 20 Jun 2018)

Brief Synopsis – A wealthy lawyer is questioned by police in Puerto Rico about the mysterious death of a young girl.

My Take on it – This is a film that I saw not long after it came out on video and after 17 years couldn’t remember much about what happens, so I decided to give it another try.

I now understand why I had no recollection of what happens in this film; because nothing really happens.

They don’t even try to make us like or care about any of the characters and actually manage for the viewer to despise them all instead.

The cast is superbly talented yet are wasted in a silly story like this one.

One would think that Gene Hackman, Morgan Freeman, Monica Bellucci and Thomas Jane would have all known better than to sign off on a film like this one, but alas, they all still appear here.

The plot itself moves along extremely slowly and nothing interesting actually happens the entire time since the film largely consists of conversations and interrogations between the various characters.

Unfortunately, even via this dialogue, they don’t manage to help make this story even more interesting and in the end it comes off as being very poorly played out.

This was a complete waste of time and I don’t plan to ever see this film again.

Bottom Line – Terrible thriller that doesn’t manage to do anything to make you care about the characters but makes you want to hate all of them. This film wastes the talents of some really great actors and I’m amazed that Hackman, Freeman, Jane and Bellucci would sign on for such drivel.  The plot moves along too slowly and mostly consists of conversations and interrogations of one another yet never really gives us enough information to get a better idea of what is really going on. Complete waste of time.

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – Remake of “Garde à vue” – Claude Miller (1981) – with Lino Ventura, Michel Serrault and Romy Schneider. (From IMDB)

Rating – Razzie Worthy (3/10)
