Number of Times Seen – 1 (1 Jul 2018)
Brief Synopsis – After an Albino Gorilla is infected with a dangerous pathogen that causes it to grow in size, his zoologist handler teams up with a genetics researcher to stop him and two other infected animals from destroying Chicago.
My Take on it – This is a film that I was interested in seeing ever since I saw the trailer for it a few months back.
I recall really enjoying the video game that this film is based on and they do a nice job adapting it to a full length film.
I really liked the way that they have modernized the science of the story because it helps make this feel even more realistic due to that.
The casting of Dwayne Johnson in the lead was an interesting one because his character is both an action hero AND a zoologist. The action hero aspects are tailor made for him, but the scientist part was a bit of a stretch.
The action scenes are enhanced by some great special effects which are breathtaking to take in.
Overall, this film gets more things right than wrong and found a way to take a simple idea and turn it into a very entertaining and enjoyable “monster” movie that lets us have a stronger connection with the main “monster” than most films even attempt to achieve.
Bottom Line – The game this film is based on was a fun video game back in the day and they do an interesting job making it relevant based on modern day science and technology in order to make it seem plausible. Johnson is perfect in his role of action hero despite it being somewhat of a stretch to believe him to be an expert zoologist. The action scenes and special effects in this film are breathtaking to watch and they get so much right in order to make this fun and enjoyable despite having quite a simple premise. Recommended!
MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – Despite sitting at only 51% on Rotten Tomatoes, this actually stands as the best reviewed movie based on a video game of all time. (From IMDB)
Rating – Globe Worthy (8/10)
