The Titan (2018)

“No one attempts the impossible without belief in something greater than themselves. Even if that something is a someone.” – Prof. Martin Collingwood

Number of Times Seen – 1 (4 Jul 2018)

Brief Synopsis – In the not so distant future, a soldier is recruited for a program that will help populate a new planet when the resources of the Earth are almost exhausted.

My Take on it – This is a film that I have been interested in seeing for quite some time due to its premise which sounded so interesting.

The film actually starts off really well and they manage to keep things interesting and intriguing through the first half.

They keep things plausible from a theoretical scientific perspective and it’s easy to see how technology could reach the points that they describe.

Unfortunately, at the halfway point, things get a bit out of control and the seemingly plausible idea takes a nosedive into territory that changes the way we should perceive it all.

Once that happens, it unfortunately negates all of the progress of the story up until that point which is quite a shame.

Sam Worthington is great in the lead role and we easily get a feeling of the patriotism of his character who wants to do what he can in order to help progress humanity’s future.

Bottom Line – Film that starts off great with a really interesting and enjoyable premise but changes directions half way through that make it spiral out of control. Worthington is great in the lead as we get to see what makes him so patriotic the whole way through.  The science seems plausible and I can understand how the world could get to the situation that they describe here but they go too far with their ideas that it negates everything that they do beforehand.

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – The island of Gran Canaria, Spain, where the locations are filmed, is often referred to as a ‘miniature continent’ because of the diverse nature of its landscapes and habitats. In fact, the entire western half of the island is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, (From IMDB)

Rating – BAFTA Worthy (5/10)
