Pumping Iron (1977)

“I don’t have any weak points. I had weak points three years ago, but my main thing in mind is, my goal always was, to even out everything to the point… that everything is perfect. Which means if I want to increase one muscle a half inch, the rest of the body has to increase. I would never make one muscle increase or decrease, because everything fits together now, and all I have to do is get my posing routine down more perfect, which is almost impossible to do, you know. It’s perfect already.” – Arnold Schwarzenegger

Number of Times Seen – 1 (8 Jul 2018)

Brief Synopsis – Documentary about the various bodybuilders vying for the titles of Mr. Olympia and Mr. Universe as they train for the big competition.

My Take on it – This is another film that I have heard about for years but had no real interest in seeing what it was all about.

The fact that it is known as the film which really introduced Arnold Schwarzenegger to the world despite having been in a few other films prior to this one.

Unfortunately, I found this film to not be engaging at all and didn’t help me become more interested ion the world of bodybuilding.

It’s quite fun seeing how prominent this film features Arnie especially since very few people really knew who he was at the time despite the fact that it is a known fact that he always wanted to achieve stardom so that he would be recognizable wherever he went.

Overall, this film doesn’t manage to achieve what it tries to do in order to make the world of bodybuilding more understandable and interesting to the layman since it falls quite short in making us care about the characters or the storyline presented.

Bottom Line – Strange film that just isn’t very engaging to someone like me who has no real interest about the world of bodybuilding.  It’s fun seeing how prominently Arnie is featured in this film at a time that was long before anyone really knew who he was despite his aspirations in the world to be popular and well known by everyone.  This documentary doesn’t work as well as one would hope and falls very short of making us care about any of the various people featured.

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – Arnold Schwarzenegger admitted that he had made up several stories in the movie for attention because the producers told him that without drama it would be boring. One of the stories made up was the fact that he did not attend his father’s funeral because of a body building competition that was going to happen in a couple of months. Arnold did actually attend his father’s funeral and spoke to him shortly before he passed. (From IMDB)

Rating – BAFTA Worthy (5/10)
