Soldier (1998)

“Brave. It means that even when you’re scared you control your emotions. You make the fear be really small and tiny. ” – Sandra

Number of Times Seen – 1 (10 Jul 2018)

Brief Synopsis – A genetically engineered soldier is deemed obsolete and s abandoned on a far away planet to die.

My Take on it – This is a film that I never had seen before and was interested in seeing what it was all about.

Unfortunately, the entire production of this film is a complete mess.

The acting is too over the top by just about everyone involved including star Kurt Russell.

Russell feels very miscast in the lead role and doesn’t manage to make the character seem anything more than one dimensional.

Jason Isaacs and Gary Busey don’t get their characters do anything at all besides sit around seeming gruff.

The action scenes of this film are laughable and none of them really look realistic enough even for a futuristic setting.

The story itself comes across as being quite silly and isn’t able to manage to give us anything new or innovative in a premise that have been used and reused so many times over the years quite often more successfully than they managed here.

The special effects are not done well enough and that helps add to the unrealistic feeling of the entire film the entire time.

Bottom Line – Extremely boring film that doesn’t work at all. The action scenes are quite laughable and Russell feels very miscast in the lead. The story is quite silly to watch unfold and doesn’t bring us anything new or innovative because the same premise has been used before much more successfully.  Poor special effects also add to the unrealistic feeling of this film which makes it even harder to try and find some speck of enjoyment in this movie.

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – While listing the weapons on which Todd is trained, you can see he is capable of using the “Illudium PU36 ES,M” otherwise known as the Illudium PU36 Explosive Space Modulator. This is the same weapon Marvin the Martian is always threatening to use on Earth, in his Bugs Bunny cartoon appearances. (From IMDB)

Rating – Razzie Worthy (3/10)
