Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (2007)

“I can guarantee the closest shave you’ll ever know.” – Sweeney Todd

Number of Times Seen – 1 (10 Jul 2018)

Brief Synopsis – A former barber who was falsely exiled returns to his hometown to enact revenge on those who wronged him.

My Take on it – This is a film that I have purposely avoided for years due to having no interest what so ever in the premise.

As I’m still trying to watch all of the Oscar Best Actor nominations, I decided to finally see what it was all about since Johnny Depp got nominated for this role.

This film was not interesting at all.

They take the idea to extremes and since I’m not a fan of dark films especially in the horror genre, this premise just didn’t work for me.

Depp clearly feels quite miscast in the lead and is far from being the best singer which puts a damper on the effectiveness of this role.

I’m a big puzzled as to how he got both Oscar and Golden Globe nominations for this role and even managed to win at the Globes.

The rest of the cast is filled with very talented actors but the only one who truly stands out here is Sacha Baron Cohen who proves he can actually act and sing in the very eccentric role that he plays.

Overall, this film is way too dark for its own good and goes way too far with its premise and just doesn’t work at all.

Bottom Line – Not interesting at all. Depp feels miscast in the lead and can’t sing for his life.  The story’s idea has some potential but it gets too dark along the way to really make it worthwhile.  The rest of the cast is quite talented but the biggest standout is Sacha Baron Cohen who proves he can truly act (and sing) with this very eccentric role.  Not sure if Depp really deserved an Oscar Nomination for this role and am quite surprised that he got a Golden Globe for Best Actor for this performance.

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – For his audition, Sacha Baron Cohen sang the entire score of Fiddler on the Roof (1971) for director Tim Burton. (From IMDB)

Rating – Razzie Worthy (3/10)

  1. This is one of only about 3 musicals I actually enjoyed but it does go on a bit too long, I think and I really have gone off Johnny Depp following all the details that have come out with regards to his treatment of his ex-wife.
