Number of Times Seen – 1 (12 Jul 2018)
Brief Synopsis – Participants and organizers of a non-stop dance marathon try to deal with the intensity of such an event in their quest for the grand prize.
My Take on it – This is a film that I heard about years ago yet had absolutely no idea what it was all about.
I never would have been able to guess that it was about a non-stop dance marathon that lasts quite a long time.
They do an interesting job using this as a character study as we see what happens to these people as they are slowly worn down by exhaustion and fatigue over the long time period.
The cast is superb in this film and the two main standouts are Jane Fonda and Gig Young.
Young deservingly won an Oscar for this performance in the Supporting Actor category.
The pacing of this film is mostly quite slow in order to try and let us begin to understand how each of these characters ended up here and what they are going through both physically and emotionally during the course of this marathon.
We get to see the effects that this ind of event has on people as we get to also see how they change over time due to the fact that they slowly begin to peel away layer by layer of their personas right in front of us.
Bottom Line – Very interesting film that allows us to see people are they are slowly worn down due to exhaustion and fatigue due to this non-stop marathon. The cast is superb and obviously Fonda and Young both stand out the most between everyone. Young deservingly won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for this role. The film moves along quite slowly yet still lets us try and understand what every one of these characters is going through along the way and we slowly see how their personas begin to change as layer by layer things are peeled away. Recommended!
