The Sessions (2012)

“I believe in a God with a sense of humor. I would find it absolutely intolerable not to be to able blame someone for all this.” – Mark

Number of Times Seen – 2 (7 Jan 2013 and 17 Jul 2018)

Brief Synopsis – Based on the true story of a man confined to an iron lung that wished to find true love despite his illness.

My Take on it – This is a film that I saw not long after it came out and despite its strange and unique premise I recalled enjoying it very much.

Upon rewatching it, I felt that I enjoyed it even more.

The film does a great job of showing a very unique situation filled with special characters that we can easily care about what will happen to them.

John Hawkes is superb in the lead role and I’m still astounded as to how he didn’t manage to get an Oscar nomination for this role while his co-star Helen Hunt,(who also does a great job here) got a Best Supporting Actress nomination; sometimes, the Academy makes some really strange decisions…

This is a film that takes us to some places that few people ever venture to and it tells us so much about the characters who all want nothing more than to be seen as doing and experiencing normal things in life.

William H. Macy is also great in a very supportive supporting role as a priest who remains understanding no matter what kind of situation he is faced with along the way.

Bottom Line – Such a great film because the characters and situations feel quite genuine. Great cast helps bring these characters to life an we learn to care so much about them. Hawkes is superb in this film and it’s a bit strange that Hunt got an Oscar nomination for her performance yet he was overlooked by the Academy.  Story takes us places that most people don’t venture and it says so much about the characters as to how they show how normal things can be in life.  Macy is great in a supporting role as a very supportive and understanding character no matter the situation. Recommended!

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – To emulate the curvature of Mark O’Brien’s spine, John Hawkes lay on a soccer-ball shaped piece of foam. This actually proved to be injurious to Hawkes’ own spine. (From IMDB)

Rating – Globe Worthy (8/10)
