Thirteen (2003)

“I love you and your brother more than anything in the world. I would die for you, but I won’t leave you alone right now.” – Melanie

Number of Times Seen – 1 (17 Jul 2018)

Brief Synopsis – A young girl is influenced by her best friend and no matter how much her mother tries, she is unable to help her change her ways.

My Take on it – This is a film that I heard about not long after it came out yet never had any desire to see what it was all about.

I kinda now wish that I would’ve waited even longer to find out because I really didn’t like this film at all.

The story isn’t very coherent and things are really all over the place the whole time.

The actresses playing the two leads are way too old to be playing 13 year olds which takes so much away from the realistic feeling that we should be getting form this kind of film.

Somehow Holly Hunter (who is a great actress) was nominated for an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for this performance and it really baffles me as to how.

The story itself fails to follow any direct narrative and the entire time there is a feeling that something is quite wrong with the way that it is being presented to us cause something seems missing that would make this story even remotely interesting.

Bottom Line – Terrible film that is really all over the place. The actresses playing the young children seem way too old to be portraying such characters which takes away from the realism of the whole thing. Hunter was nominated for an Oscar for Best supporting actress for her performance here, but I’m not 100% sure as to why. The story doesn’t follow any kind of direct narrative and something constantly feels wrong with the way that all is being presented due to something seeming missing from the way this is being told.

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – During a live Q&A on Ustream to celebrate the film’s 10th anniversary, hosted by Reed and Wood, the actresses claimed that neither of them can watch the movie since they both have such strong emotional reactions to the film. (From IMDB)

Rating – Razzie Worthy (2/10)
