The idea behind this feature (Genre Guesstimation) is for me to watch a bunch of new movies (or ones that I haven’t seen many times) from the chosen monthly GG genre in order to expand my knowledge of movies within that particular genre.
This month’s Genre has been chosen by Satu of Fairy Tale Pictures and it is Bestselling/Popular Novel Adaptations.
Please get me your submissions by the 25th of July by sending them to firstname.lastname@example.org
Try to think out of the box!
Let’s see if I felt that this movie would be worthy of being in the company of my others favorite movies in the genre of Bestselling/Popular Novel Adaptations.…
“I’d never given much though to how I would die. But dying in place of someone I love, seems like a good way to go. I can’t bring myself to regret the decisions that brought me face to face with death. They also brought me to Edward. ” – Isabella
Number of Times Seen – Twice (3 Apr 2009 and 17 July 2018)
Brief Synopsis – A teenager who moves to a new town to live with her sheriff father falls in love with a boy who seems to have mysterious powers.
My Take on it – For this Milestone marathon, I decided to try and tackle a five book teen fanatsy series but unfortunately the overall storyline isn’t as interesting as one would hope that it could be.
The characters don’t feel developed well enough and I’m sure that the book does a much better job at that in order to care more about each individual character’s arc across the entire series.
The way that this series depicts Vampires in a very unique way is interesting because it gives a whole new spin to the genre.
Of the 5 films in the series, this is clearly the best and I would have been happy enough if they stopped things here, but I’m sure that all of the teenage fans of the series were extremely happy that they made all 5 films.
Bottom Line – Typical teen film that doesn’t manage to be interesting enough. The book this is based on is probably much more detailed as to the budding relationship between the characters but the film version doesn’t manage to develop the characters well enough to truly care about them. I did like the way that this film depicts Vampires in a unique way. This is clearly the best of the series and fans of the book were probably quite ecstatic that they made 5 films with these characters but each subsequent film just keeps having the same story meander along.
MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – Before casting, Robert Pattinson had never heard of the Twilight novel. He only attended casting because he liked Kristen Stewart’s performance in Into the Wild (2007). (From IMDB)
Genre Grandeur Worthy? – Not at all, the whole series just doesn’t manage to reach the level of interest that most non-teens can appreciate.
Rating – BAFTA Worthy (6/10)
