The Lincoln Lawyer (2011)

“I checked the list of people I trust and your name ain’t on it. ” – Mick

Number of Times Seen – 2 (11 May 2011 and 29 Jul 2018)

Brief Synopsis – A street lawyer suspects that his client may be guilty and must struggle with his conscience as to what he should do.

My Take on it – This is a film that manages to give us a really interesting and somewhat complex legal drama which has become harder ad harder over the past few decades due to the plethora of legal procedural TV shows that are shown every night.

This phenomena has turned many of us into couch lawyers where we are able to recognize many of the elements used in court an has also made many of us be able to spot some of the common twists and turns in the genre long before they happen.

The story moves at a great pace and does a great job keeping things interesting and intriguing the entire time.

Matthew McConaughey is great in the lead role because he makes us truly believe that he IS his character instead of just acting as if he does.

The ethical issues his character deals with during the course of the film work quiet well and it’s easy to understand what he is going through.

The supporting cast is superb and filled with lots of familiar faces; William H. Macy, Ryan Phillipe, Marisa Tomei, Michael Pare, Bryan Cranston, Michaela Conlin, Josh Lucas, Frances Fisher, Jon Leguizamo, Bob Gunton and Michael Pena all have great characters that help move along this plot which moves in strange yet enjoyable ways.

Bottom Line – McConaughey is perfectly cast in the lead role and manages to give off a feeling as if he truly IS the character he portrays. The story works quite well and does a nice job of staying interesting enough especially in the age of legal procedurals which help make most of us couch lawyers where we can see many of the twists coming far away.  Supporting cast is also great to watch especially since there are so many familiar people in the film. Recommended!

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – Michael Connelly wanted Matthew McConaughey for the role of Mickey based on his performance in Tropic Thunder (2008).  (From IMDB)

Rating – Globe Worthy (7/10)

  1. The book was better. Movie not bad. Did not do well at the B.O. Was meant to be a series based on Connelly’s other books (all fantastic BTW), but never made it past the 1st.
