Foxtrot (2017)

“Mr. Feldman, your son Jonathan was killed tonight in the line of duty.” – Officer

Number of Times Seen – 1 (1 Aug 2018)

Brief Synopsis – After a family is informed that their soldier son has been killed in the line of duty, they try to get a grip on their lives.

My Take on it – I must say that I have a lot of mixed feelings about this film.

This film takes an interesting idea and presents it quite well until it gets involved in very controversial and political messages that feel as if they are added just for the sake of it.

They do a great job of taking three different parts of a timeline and presenting them in a nice way that helps give us perspective in the overall storyline.

The way that they turn the story political hurts the emotional impact of such a story because it leaves a very sour taste since it fails to even remotely try to tell the story in a neutral manner.

Being quite familiar with a number of the situations presented here, I can attest to the fact that many of them are shown in the best way possible in order to give us things in a very poignant manner, yet the fact that some of the scenes are too grossly over the top hurts any long term impact that this film can truly have as a piece of art because it wields a political agenda too heavily.

Bottom Line – Interesting idea that takes things in very controversial directions just for the sake of it.  Liked the way that this film manages to tell 3 parts of a timeline which gives us perspective on the overall storyline. This film is too political for its own good and that leaves a sour taste because it doesn’t even try and remain neutral in its position.  being very familiar with some of the situations presented here, I can’t say that they present them in the best way possible yet other parts are superbly done.  The unbalanced nature of the film hurts it more than helps it.

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – According to Samuel Maoz, the film was conceived as three episodes: The first sequence should shock and shake, the second should hypnotize, and the third should be moving. (From IMDB)

Rating – BAFTA Worthy (6/10)
