The Five Senses (1999)

“[about a new cologne he has just received as a gift] It smells like love.” – Robert

Number of Times Seen – 1 (2 Aug 2018)

Brief Synopsis – Five interconnecting stories that are each related to a different one of the five senses.

My Take on it – This is a film that I came across by accident and like dte premise so I decided to give it a try.

Unfortunately, the presentation of it all just doesn’t work well enough and things are too convoluted instead of having some kind of anchor that keeps this from drifting too far.

I must admit that the overall premise of having 5 stories that interconnect based on each of the 5 senses is an intriguing one yet they fail to make the characters or stories interesting enough to make it work.

It’s much too easy to see the hand of both the writer and director here in forcing the events to happen instead of making it all feel realistic and smooth in its depiction of everything that occurs here.

The cast is filled with some great actors like Molly Parker and Mary-Louise Parker (no relation) yet none of them seem to have enough to work with that would warrant any of them standing out in such a storyline.

The connections to the five senses feels too tacked on instead of realistic and in the end it actually feels as if they randomly chose to add a “sense” to each of the stories even when they don’t make much sense to the overall story being told.

Bottom Line – Very convoluted film that fails to have much of an anchor. The idea to try and utilize the idea of the senses is an interesting one, but it fails miserably here because in most cases it feels more tacked on instead of flowing with the story itself. None of the cast really stand out here (even the two unrelated Parker women) and it’s too easy to see the writer’s hand in making things happen because things don’t move along smoothly enough.

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – Director Jeremy Podeswa won an award for Best Canadian Feature Film at TIFF (From IMDB)

Rating – Razzie Worthy (3/10)
