Rewind This! (2013)

“Look, if idiots like Troma can make a movie that sells millions and millions of dollars of videocassettes, well then anybody can do it.” – Lloyd Kaufman

Number of Times Seen – 1 (5 Aug 2018)

Brief Synopsis – Documentary that tries to explain why the video cassette market is still so popular eventhough they no longer are used in the mainstream.

My Take on it – Last week, while appearing on a podcast on The LAMB with numerous other movie lovers, Jason Soto of Jason Soto: The Blog mentioned this documentary and the idea of the story was so interesting to me that I decided to try and find a copy of this film to watch.

They do such a fascinating job here of explaining the idea that there is a whole new sub-culture of movie lovers who still spend their movie watching time watching videos on video cassettes (both VHS and BETA)

When DVD’s starting becoming popular in the beginning of the 21st Century, I gave away hundreds and hundreds of films in my collections because I felt the format was long dead.

After watching this, I actually feel bad that I did so since I never dreamed that there would be such a market for older and obsolete videos.

This film is filled with great interviews with people that are part of this subculture that have so much insight into the history of the video cassette format and its impact on the movie watching industry along with the movie making industry over the past 40 years.

I’m so glad that I saw this film because I now have a much better understanding about the home video industry.

HUGE thanks to Jason for suggesting this film!  Tnx!

Bottom Line – Such a fascinating film that explains so much about a whole sub-culture of movie loving that is not very widely known. The interviews shown explain so much about how things have changed in the home viewing market over the past 40 years and does a great job explaining why these changes have occurred.  Really makes me wish I never gave away my video collection years ago. Recommended!

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – The documentary screened at numerous film festivals around the world, including SXSW Film Festival, Neuchâtel International Fantastic Film Festival, Fantasia International Film Festival, Melbourne International Film Festival, Strasbourg European Fantastic Film Festival, Telluride Horror Show, Sitges Film Festival, Orlando Film Festival, and several others. Rating – Globe Worthy (8/10)
