Number of Times Seen – 2 (17 Jul 2009 and 6 Aug 2018)
Brief Synopsis – A young boy realizes his dream is to be a dancer and must try and convince those around him that that is his calling in life.
My Take on it – This is a film that I saw once years ago and enjoyed it but didn’t remember much about what it was all about besides the fact that it’s about a boy who wants to be a ballet dancer.
They do a great job telling the story of a young boy who wishes to follow his dream at all costs even if everyone around him are against it and do their best to convince him that he needs to give up on it.
Jamie Bell is superb in the title role and is able to show even at such a young age a character who seems torn between his own ambitions and the will and expectations of those around him.
The choice to have this story take place during the 80’s works really well and I liked how they combine the mining strike which helps make the story even more poignant and important.
The music and dance numbers in the film work quite well and I’m not surprised at all that they made a musical out of it.
Bottom Line – Interesting idea that tells a great tale of someone trying to follow his dream even if those around him are against it. Bell is superb in the title role and you really can tell how much his character is torn by his own ambitions and what is expected from him by those close to him. The idea of basing this in the 80’s amid the mining strike helps make this story feel even more poignant and important. Recommended!
MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – Jamie Bell took ballet and other dance classes while in secondary school, which caused him to often be ridiculed by his peers. He used some of these experiences as inspiration while playing Billy Elliot. (From IMDB)
Rating – Globe Worthy (8/10)
