“Good God, man. You almost got the Cheese Touch! ” – Chirag Gupta
Number of Times Seen – 1 (6 Aug 2018)
Brief Synopsis – A young boy must find a way to deal with starting middle school and keep his reputation intact.
My Take on it – In order to connect better with my kids, I started reading the book series that this film is based on.
I actually enjoyed the books a lot because of the way that many of the short storylines are connected throughout.
I have been waiting to finally start watching the films since I knew that they wouldn’t be able to reach the same emotional and intellectual levels that they accomplish in the books.
This film allows us to get a better visualization of the characters in the book along with their many adventures.
I loved the way that they chose to integrate the caricatures from the book into the movie and even animate parts of it in order to give the film a stringer connection to the books and of course to the fans of the book.
The cast is ok and even the use of Rachel Harris and Steve Zahn as the parents works quite well.
Overall tho, this film doesn’t feel as inspirational or impactful as the books are and something constantly feels lacking the entire time.
Hopefully when I get around to seeing the sequels, I will find out that they manage to raise the level of impact in them, but I must admit that this is just a passing dream that hopefully will be realized eventhough I am not that optimistic based on the way that books have been adapted for the screen in the past.
Bottom Line – Interesting adaptation of the popular book which helps visualize many of the scenes from the book, but overall, this is not very inspiring. Really enjoyed the way the integrate the text and caricatures from the books into the movie which helps form a stronger connection. Overall fun film but more geared for kids than the books are. Maybe the sequels will be better.
MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – When Greg and Rowley are outside building the snowman, they fix up the snowman to look like he was peeing in the snow. (From IMDB)
Rating – BAFTA Worthy (5/10)
