The Mercy (2017)

“A man alone on a boat is more alone than any man alive.” – Sir Francis Chichester

Number of Times Seen – 1 (7 Aug 2018)

Brief Synopsis – True story of a man who joined the quest to be the first man to solo circumnavigate the globe by boat.

My Take on it – This is a movie that I knew absolutely nothing about before watching it besides the identities of the two stars and that it has to do with sailing.

This film gives us quite an interesting biographical tale yet it could have been done so much better which might have made it a more enjoyable and uplifting film.

The do manage to tell us a nice story of the adventure of a lifetime yet somewhere along the way this film loses its focus and can’t manage to stay interesting.

This film’s story deals with following one’s dreams no matter what and they do a nice job showing us the importance of fulfilling such a dream quest and how it can affect every member of a family.

I liked the way that they were able to show the anguish and suspense of both those on the journey and those waiting at home for their loved one to return home from such a quest.

Colin Forth and Rachel Weisz are both great actors and even here they manage to shine yet something seems very lacking with the plot and story along with the way that they present this true story to us.

Bottom Line – Interesting story that could have been much better. They manage to tell a tale of an adventure of a lifetime yet something feels a bit lost along the way.  The idea of following your dream at all costs is shown really well and we get to see the anguish of both those on such a journey and those left at home to await their safe return. Firth and Weisz are both quite good here, but something is lacking in the way that they present the story.

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – At age 55, Colin Firth is 20 years older than Donald Crowhurst was when he set off on the Golden Globe race. (From IMDB)

Rating – BAFTA Worthy (5/10)
