Newlyweds (2011)

“Yeah Dara’s not a terrible guy, he’s just umm… an actor. ” – Buzzy

Number of Times Seen – 1 (7 Aug 2018)

Brief Synopsis – A young couple that just got married try to maneuver their way through the complex maze of family and friends while still trying to stay together.

My Take on it – I have always enjoyed Edward Burns’ small independent films and this film is no exception.

He manages to give us a great story that comes across as being very realistic the entire time.

The cast is superb and the fact that Burns and his so-star Caitlin Fitzgerald have such amazing chemistry together helps give the story an even more realistic feel throughout.

They expertly use “interview interludes” with the characters which helps us relate to them even more yet also gives us a much better understand of their thoughts and motivations in everything that they do.

Had this film been done without those interviews, we wouldn’t have been able to get as deep an understanding as we do.

They manage to develop the characters really well and the way that we slowly learn about each of their lives helps us feel more for these characters because they quickly become quite familiar to us through their stories.

The film’s storyline feels quite personal yet it doesn’t overstep its reach which is good because it’s done so well in order to make the story and characters feel so real the whole time.

I’m so glad that Burns continues to make small films like this one that tel great and important stories on a small scale.

Bottom Line – Great story that comes across as being quite realistic largely due to the great performances by Burns and Fitzgerald. The use of interview interludes throughout helps us get a much better understanding of the characters thoughts and motivations and allows us to learn so much more than had they done this film in the usual way. The characters are all developed quite well and I really enjoyed how we slowly learn more and more about their pasts as the story progresses because they create characters that seem very real. Recommended!

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – At $9,000, this is the lowest film budget that Edward Burns has ever worked with. (From IMDB)

Rating – Globe Worthy (8/10)
